Last year it was announced that GM potato trials were to take place this Spring in two places in the UK - Cambridge and Derbyshire.
The Derbyshire site was withdrawn and on February 27th this year Defra announced that BASF - a chemical company - intended to plant Genetically Modified potatoes in the Hedon / Preston area of East Yorkshire.
If this happened – it would pave the way for other GM crops to be cultivated in the UK.
We can now confirm that Jeffrey M. Smith - leading spokesperson on the health dangers of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) - will be appearing at the Haven Arms Public House in Hedon on Monday 18th June 2007. This is a massive opportunity to see this magnetic speaker in the very place the UK government chose to trial its only ‘field’ trial of GM crops.
Although the public representation period is over - there are still things that you can do.
1. Write to your M.P
2. Talk to your local Councillor
3. Sign the petition
4. Talk about the issue - keep people informed.
